Teach Me Now, You Know I'm Not A Hopeless Case

Our two-week long summer Greek bootcamp is over. And I survived! As did all of my classmates. And I'm in the advanced section? What the??? Since my brain is fried, enjoy Bono and the boys live (in 2000) from Dublin. Turn it up!

FCA Impact Play: "In Serious Jeopardy"

This is a semi-daily devotional that is emailed from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes . I found it very timely and significant. If you'd like to subscribe to the FCA Impact Play, click here . In Serious Jeopardy Monday, August 27th, 2007 READY: "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. . .But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved." -Ephesians 2:1,4-5 SET: "You are now justifiably facing consequences for the decisions you made and the conduct in which you engaged. Your career, freedom and public standing are now in the most serious jeopardy." These stern words were written to NFL quarterback Michael Vick from the league's commissioner, Roger Goodell, after Vick agreed to plead guilty to select charges in a dog-fighting operation. Goodell suspended Vick indefinitely and without pay. Now reread those words

A Prayer for Today

Psalm 130 - Waiting for Divine Redemption, A Song of Ascents. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning , more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. Psalm 131 -Song of Quiet Trust, A Song of Ascents. Of David. O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high;I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvellous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me. O Israel, hope in the

Sing the blues

I said, “I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.” I was silent and still; I held my peace to no avail; my distress grew worse, my heart became hot within me. While I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: “Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight. Surely everyone stands as a mere breath. Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up, and do not know who will gather. And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you. Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool. I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it. Remove your stroke from me; I am worn down by the blows of your hand. You chastise mortals in punishment for sin, consuming like a

A morning walk in the rain

I got up early this morning and decided to go for a walk. (I "borrowed" the idea from Law & Gospel .) LTSG is on Seminary Ridge, but at the corner, it turns into Confederate Avenue. If you're familiar with Gettysburg, (the battle or the movie) Confederate Avenue is now the point from which Pickett's Charge was launched on the third day of the battle. It is also the site of many of the monuments to the Confederate troops who served and died here. I travelled the route a week or so ago with my parents in a car tour of the battlefield, but until talking to L&G, I didn't realize how close they were. I set out at 7 a.m. to see how far I could get by 8. I took my Bible and Devotions book with me , because I figured, you're sitting on one of the most historically inspiring areas of ground in the country, you may as well use it. I made it the mile and a quarter to the Virginia monument in 45 minutes (good time for an out of shape OLine coach with a bad knee

One Day Down, 1364 to go

Well, the first day of summer Greek is over, and I survived! Actually, today was one of the most inspiring, humbling, exciting days of my life. I am in class with 34 special, talented, gifted and blessed people. While I didn't get to meet all of them, and have probably already forgotten the names of some of the ones I did meet, when we shared information about ourselves; I am humbled to be in their company. So many of them are pipe liners, straight out of college, who knew that this was their path from an early age. I am so envious because I chose to walk away from God, while they ran to embrace Him. I know that we're all on our own path, but I wish my path could be a little longer. There is so much talent, passion and enthusiasm that I'm excited to spend the weekend parsing verbs. Well, not really, but I am excited to be here. My enthusiasm is only dampened because my being here means that I'm not home. But I am where I need to be now, and God will provide and protect

My Last Sermon Before I Learn How To Preach

This was the sermon that I gave at my home church on Sunday, August 12 before I headed to LTSG . The lessons were: Genesis 15:1–6; Psalm 33:12–22; Hebrews 11:1–16 and the Gospel lesson, Luke 12:32-40. I have been working on this sermon for a while. Mostly because I knew I would be spending most of the last two weeks driving between Saginaw and Gettysburg. I knew I needed to get it done early. I knew I didn ’t want to realize I had left the copy on my computer in Gettysburg. Also, I think writing a paper before it is due is a habit I should get into. As I was working on this, I had a series of events or incidents happen to me. Some people believe that God is too busy to be involved in the details of their daily lives. I believe the opposite. I know that God is so big and so vast, that He is involved in the smallest details of our lives, from a story by a friend, to a song on the radio or room assignments or someone volunteering. I want to point out some of the little happenings that hav

Well, I'm here

After 4 trips and over 4,750 miles driven, I'm in Gettysburg. Have a bunch of unpacking to do, and, oh yeah. I start classes on Friday! I'm thrilled to be here, but feel guilty for leaving family and friends back home.

Travelling, Loading & Praying

I'm on my way home to pick up another load of stuff, and then get back home for the weekend. I'm giving the sermon at church on Sunday. I will be trying to link the following ideas.
