Happy Anniversary to My Blog, Happy Anniversary to My Blog

Today (well, yesterday, but I have been writing {note the use of the Greek perfect tense} a paper and let the time slip by) is the One Year Anniversary of the start of Prepare Ye. So I'm giving myself paper. And starting a new feature:

Random Seminary Conversation
"If Baptism and Communion are both Sacraments, why can we do one only once when I've had the other the other 9 times in the past week? And why do you have to go through a class for one, but don't for the one that makes you a member of the church?"

If any of my seminary brethren and sisteren want to borrow the idea to post some of the interesting conversations that you happen upon in Seminaryland, please do so. They should be, to quote former late night talk show host, and wearer of a mean hi-top fade, Arsenio Hall, "Things That Make You Say Hmmmmmm."

Actually, the norm for the church is the Adult Catechumenate, which one would go through many classes before approaching the font and then taking their place at the table. For Lutherans, infant baptism states that the faith of the community is sufficient for nurturing faith for the young until such time they can claim God’s promises made through baptism for themselves (confirmation).

Congrats on the one year anniversary. You do have a great blog.

and btw......GO BLUE!

That question reminds me somewhat of a rhetorical question one of the pastoral mentors asked my lay ministry class while discussing the Sacraments: Why is it that we Lutherans create so many ecclesiastical rules and barriers regarding who may preside over the Eucharist -- a liturgical formula that has been unchanged for centuries and fairly straightforward "by the book" -- but then when it comes to the sermon, in the absence of a pastor we let (and I quote) any idiot from the congregation get up and preach a lay sermon?

And why is it that kids who want to join spend as long as three years in confirmation, adults with a checkbook a couple weeks of snacks and chat with the pastor. Hmmm.. sorry .. feeling antagonistic about media reporting on why the Jeremiah Wright story won't die- stop by and check out my jeremiad. Oh and - Happy anniversary to u
